One tasty new theme — Lime

I have been working on the Lime theme for some time now. It takes into account some requests by users of our themes, including ExtraContent. This new theme, Lime, is a professional, bold design that is very good just any sort of site you can dream up. It is great for creating a business site, a blog, a portfolio a personal or school site and much more.

Below is a quick rundown of Lime’s features. You can jump over to the product page to learn all the details as well as check out the live preview site and walk-thru video.

Lime offers...

Quicklook

Six content width options, ranging from 600 px up through 1,100 px. The default width if 900 px
Ten header backgrounds, including the ability to use the RapidWeaver Color Picker to choose a solid color
Eight different header overlays which allow you to better customize the look of your site. Overlays default to being not visible
Six blank header overlays for use with RWmultitool
Four header content / height options, which include the ability to use ExtraContent in the header
Two additional ExtraContent areas (in addition to the header option). One is just below the header, the other in the footer.
Nine bold menu style choices.
The sidebar can be placed on either the right- or left-hand side of the site, or hidden altogether. Default is on the right-hand side
Five different blog badge styles. The default is a stylish star.
Ability to add extra style to the sub menu bar with a riveted look.
Ability to add the page's title to the top of the content area. Defaults to being hidden
Sixteen different color picker options. These are detailed in the variations section (click the eyedropper icon above).

The Lime theme also makes heavy use of the RapidWeaver color picker. With it you can change the colors for all of the following areas of your site design with the quick click of the mouse. No code needed:

Learn the ins and outs of RapidWeaver
RapidWeaver Classroom has begun a new series of video tutorials incorporating much of the RapidWeaver Classroom curriculum that has been developed over the course of nearly two years. The Complete Design Demonstration series takes you through the process of designing a website from start to finish, using many of the different 3rd-party plugins and theme features such as ExtraContent.

The purpose of this series is to demonstrate the usage of plugins and other features in a real-world scenario, and to break-down designs that are seemingly complex into something much more simple. To begin this new series, you can learn how many of the pages at RapidWeaver Classroom were developed, utilizing 3rd-party plugins such as Stacks, PlusKit, Carousel, Accordion, Collage 2, EasyTube, and more.

Take Gyro for a spin
The Gyro stack is an image slider stack that can create elegant rotating banners for your Rapidweaver site. With all of the debates about the future of flash on the web, the smart thing to do is use simple widgets that utilize HTML/CSS/Javascript so that your site can be viewed across all platforms, even mobile. Gyro does just that!

You will enjoy the simplicity of implementing the Gyro Stack. Similar to the Stacks Plug-in, the interface is intuitive and easy to build, while under the hood, its still very powerful machine. Gyro will hold as many images as you want and will dynamically build an elegant navigation ribbon. There are also 6 different ribbon themes to choose from out of the box that can be displayed on either the right or left hand side!

Factory Updater v1.1

I've made some very minor updates to the Factory theme to correct a small bug with it’s footer display.

We're offering an updater application to automatically correct this little bug. Simply download the updater below, and run it. The updater patches only the affected files within the theme. This update is free to all Factory theme customers and is recommended for all Factory theme users.

(Version 1.1 - Updated on March 1, 2010)
• Fixes a bug which caused the built-in RapidWeaver footer to not display
• Adds support for changing the color of the built-in RapidWeaver footer's color via the color picker

Note: For more advanced RapidWeaver users who may or may not want to know, the following files that were modified internally are as follows: theme.plist, index.html, colors.css and styles.css

Float theme update v1.5

I have made some updates to our Float theme to fix a few very minor bugs in the navigations font display. Here’s the outline of the fixes below:

(Version 1.5 - Updated on January 14, 2010)

• Fixes bug where the menu font defaults back to Lucida Grande for navigation links that have been visited. This update ensures that visited links do not change fonts.

This update is suggested for Float theme owners using other fonts aside from the default theme font in the navigation. This updater is not needed for users who purchase this theme after January 14, 2010.

This update also contains all of the fixes that were made in the Float v1.2 through v1.4 updates as well.

Internal theme files updated are:
index.hmtl, styles.css, theme.plist, colors.css, as well as these files in the css>fonts folder: menu_georgia.css, menu_helv.css, menu_lucida.css, menu_palatino.css

Beginning today, December 24, 2009 I’ll be out of the office for the holidays. Liz and I are going out of town Friday evening and will be gone for a while so I won’t be getting back to emails until we return January 5, 2010.

Kiwi
If you’ve not heard Isaiah, from YourHead Software, has recently released Kiwi, a brand-new twitter client. It is truly outstanding! I had the pleasure of working on it with him, designing graphics and UI elements and such, as well as themes for the app itself. I look forward to continuing my work with him on Kiwi as the app goes forward.

Kiwi Themes
In connection to Kiwi, Ollie Levy and myself are working on Kiwi Themes. It is a repository for themes for Isaiah’s twitter client. Currently We have 12 themes online and will have more after the new year. We’re also working on a system to allow users to upload their own themes to share with the world, and much more. So be sure to check that out at http://kiwithemes.com

Wallpaper
I’ve also put up some desktop wallpaper for Kiwi to help dress up your Mac.

Icons
While you’re on the Icon Lab check out out the Kiwi wallpaper be sure to have a look at our Unity icon set. It was released earlier this year and is great for site and application development. Dashing theme update v1.1

I’ve updated the Dashing theme to correct a bug found in the horizontal menu.

We're offering an updater application to automatically correct this bug. Simply download the updater below, and run it. The updater patches only the affected files within the theme.

The updater fixes a bug in which the horizontal menu items that have been visited no longer show correct active menu graphic.

Download the updater here

After running the updater you'll need to quit and restart RapidWeaver. If you've published a site using Dashing you'll need to republish all your site's files to be certain that the update is published to your active site. You can see how to accomplish this by watching the following walk-thru video found on the Realmac Software site:

and all of the files in the contents>css>menu folder

If you’re a power user and have modified any of these files internally within the theme, those changes will be overwritten by the installer. If you’re not a superdy-dooper power user there’s no need to worry about any of this mumbo-jumbo. Just run the installer and republish your site as directed above.

This update is recommended for all Dashing theme owners to fix the cosmetic problem with the horizontal menu.

This week Liz and I will be getting married. We’re getting hitched on November 27th, which is this Friday.

Needless to say, starting Wednesday (Nov. 25) I will be taking a break from answering emails and answering support questions. I’ll be away about a week or so, give or take a day. I’d like to say that I’ll keep an eye out on the inbox and the site, but I’m going to be honest and say that there is likely no chance I’ll open the inbox while we’re away on our honeymoon. We're offering an updater application to automatically correct this found bug. Simply download the updater below, and run it. The updater patches only the affected files within the theme. It not only adds patches for this update, but any past updates that have been made for Vanilla.

This update fixes a small html tag problem.

I've made a minor update to the Executive theme to correct a small some bug found since its initial release. If this update affects you will receive an email sent to the address you used during your purchase of the theme.

We're offering an updater application to automatically correct this found bug. Simply download the updater below, and run it. The updater patches only the affected files within the theme.

The updater fixes a problem with the default width of the background accents div container. The original theme’s background accent div wrapper was set too wide making it seem that the site was off-center when the browser window’s width was reduced too far.

So I have a some big projects in the works for elixir. Some major theme stuff. There’s not a release date for this but it is well on its way. In the mean time I wanted to share a nerdy little site I built for myself recently.

I’m a huge comic book reading nerd. My favorite all-time character is Spider-Man. I have a personal goal of collecting one copy of each issue of the Amazing Spider-Man. With approximately 600 issues out there, all of varying prices and such, it makes it hard to remember which issues I own when rooting around in backissue bins. So I wrote a little website I can pull up on my iPhone when I am out and about, for instance there is a good size comic book convention in town this weekend...

It is a simple little webpage, and gave me a chance to try my hand at PHP a bit more, too. Though I am positive it is not the cleanest PHP out there, I suppose it doesn’t have to be since it is only for my personal nerdy needs.

Introducing Thurly

I am extremely happy to announce Thurly, a plug-in for Safari that allows you to both shorten URLs in a snap as well as post directly to Twitter without ever leaving your browser window.

With a quick keyboard shortcut (Command-Control-T) you Thurly springs to life automatically shortening the URL of the web page you are on.

From there you can copy the shortened URL out to use elsewhere. Paste it into emails, forums posts, blog entries and much more.

Thurly allows you to post to Twitter from the main interface. It populates the Status field, by default, with a shortened URL and let's you edit your post as you like. Click "Tweet" or press Command-Enter and your post lands in your Twitter updates.

Registering Thurly is not required. You can use the base features of the plug-in, shortening URLs and posting to Twitter, for free until the cows come home.

We have included some bells and whistles to make your life easier. Registering allows you to use multiple Twitter accounts, letting you post from different accounts on the fly from the main interface.

We have also built in the option to use a Twitter template. The template let's you set a default message that appears in your Twitter Status field each time your open Thurly. Which can also be overridden at any time.

Float theme update v1.4

I have made some updates to our Float theme to fix a few very minor bugs. Here’s the outline of the fixes below:

(Version 1.4 - Updated on May 20, 2009)

• Fixes bug with site title where letters with descenders (ex: p, g, q, j, etc) were cut off on the bottom. This problem only showed up in Internet Explorer 6.

• Removes errant reference to an image file in the blockquote CSS styling.

• Removes errant reference to an image file in the navigation CSS.

This update is suggested for all Float theme owners. This updater is not needed for users who purchase this theme after May 20, 2009.

This update also contains all of the fixes that were made in the Float v1.2 and v1.3 updates.

Moving into the future
Recently Microsoft released Internet Explorer 8, which is a huge improvement over both previous versions (6 and 7). In doing so they've also announced that update notices for users of both IE 6 and IE 7 will be sent out via Windows' updater, helping to get these people using a modern browser.

Being that Internet Explorer 6 is about 6 years old now and no longer supported by Microsoft, we're dropping support for this browser with the release of this theme. What does this mean for sites designed with this theme? It means that the sites you design with this theme will display in IE 6, but will not look identical to the way the site displays in other browsers. It also means that PNG images with transparent backgrounds will look slightly odd, with a tinted blue background. Other than this the site will not look messed up or disfigured in IE 6.

We have been using Internet Explorer 8 in our testing of this theme and find it to be a huge leap forward for Microsoft, and we encourage all PC users to upgrade. You won't regret it.

Aqua Update v1.2 [updated x2]

Update:
Some users have been asking if they will need to install the v.1.1 update for this one to work. The simple answer is no. But if you want to receive the benefits of the v.1.1 update you will need to run the v1.1. updater BEFORE running the v.1.2 updater. I recommend running both myself.

Update 2:
As one user points out, I accidentally overwrote the v.1.1 update, so to make things easier I’ve added in the colors.css file in the v.1.2 update, hence combining both the v.1.1 and 1.2 updates into this one package. This updater is your one stop Aqua update.

I've made some more updates to the Aqua theme to correct some bugs found since its last release. All Aqua theme owners should grab this updater. Users who purchased the Aqua theme after April 14, 2009 do not need to install the v1.2 updater.

We're offering an updater application to automatically correct these found bugs in the theme. Simply download the updater below, and run it. The updater patches only the affected files within the theme.

Version 1.2
• Updates IEPNGFIX. This javascript allows Internet Explorer 6 to properly display PNG images correctly. Both those used in the theme those added in the users content. Latest version of IEPNGFIX is quicker it seems as well.

• Updates menu tab coding to allow for proper display in FireFox 2.0. Previously the tabs only displayed fully in Safari, FireFox 3.0, IE6 and IE7. FireFox 2.0 Now has no problems with them either.

Stepping things up a bit

For months now I, along with the others I work with at my day job, have had to undergo a lot of stress. For sometime those in charge at the place I work have been holding layoffs over our heads and the stress has been mounting for each of us. They’d not decided who was to get laid off until just last week, and they still do not plan to release the names of those people until next week. Needless to say it has been a rough time.

Last week however my boss, the editor of the Sports section of the paper, told us that he’d finally heard who was on the final list, and that if we’d like to know earlier than next week we could come in and speak with him. Seems that I am on that list of people. So, even though I’ve not officially been let go from the newspaper as of yet, I have taken this week and part of next as vacation time to get some elixir work completed.

If that long list of layoffs does not change over the next week I will let you all know. If I am in fact let go though you should see a lot more great stuff from elixir and its sister sites.

Moving into the future
For Espresso's sidebar and blockquote we're using a method for rounding the corners that is part of the CSS 3 standard. This is used on many popular sites and services like Twitter and Apple. It provides nice, lightweight, rounded corners and in older browsers that do not support it it degrades gracefully to normal squared off boxes as to not cause problems for your users.

RSS Stacks Plug-in

Our first Stacks plug-in, for including Twitter on your Stacks page, was really well received. We had many requests for an RSS Stacks Library item. So we developed one using Feed2JS. This little plug-in allows you to enter an RSS feed and have it imported right into your Stacks page.

The feed can be easily styled in Stacks. It allows you to adjust the summary length, or turn it off all together, as well as modify the header size. It is a free download. Pop by the Stacks Plug-ins page to check out the walk-thru video and to download it.

Recently YourHead Software released an API for their RapidWeaver plug-in, Stacks. And since we love Stacks so much we decided to try our hand at making some plug-ins for Stacks.

We’ve started out with a plug-in that will allow you to add a Twitter stream, or multiple streams, to a Stacks page.

Shrinking your long URLs

I have recently begun to teach myself PHP through a wonderful course on Lynda.com in some of my ‘spare time.’

In the process I thought it would be a good idea to give myself a project to use as a testing ground for my new found, limited PHP knowledge. I set out to make a URL shortening service for myself. Rather than reinvent the wheel I used a little bit of open source code as a base and built up from there.

After a couple of days of work I ended up with Thurly. Hop on over and check it out. I’d love to get some feedback on it. I will probably tweak it over time and may even add more functionality. For not though it offers a web site for shortening URLs, a back-end API for applications and other sites, and a boomarklet to make shortening your URLs easy to do on the fly.

Feel free to use Thurly for your projects, Twitter, other social networking, whatever you like.

Float theme update v 1.3

I have made some more updates to our Float theme to fix a few bugs. Here’s the outline of the fixes below:

(Version 1.3 - Updated on February 1, 2009)

• Fixes bug with header height in Internet Explorer 6. When Title and Slogan were disabled in the Site Setup, the header would collapse in IE 6. The height would remain the same in all other major browsers though. This has been fixed. For reference the Title and Slogan container 80 px tall.

• Fixes a small bug where the color of visited blog entry titles would revert to body link colors instead of the blog title color.

• Adds in several theme style presets. These are found at the bottom of the Page Inspector window in the button with the folder image on it.

The update is being done as an updater that run and fix only the affected files. You can download the updater here below. Simply run it and follow any on screen prompts.

This update is strongly suggested for all Float theme owners. This updater is not needed for users who purchase this theme after February 1, 2009.

This update also contains all of the fixes that were made in the Float v1.2 update. Details can be found here on that update.

Update:

Float theme update v1.2

I have made some updates to our Float theme to fix a few bugs. The bugs that are being fixed are outlined here:

• Closes the h2 tag around the site slogan. Mistakenly deleted this prior to the initial release. This update adds that closing tag back into the index.html file.

• Fixes a bug where when the title and / or slogan were toggled off in the Site Setup pane the menu bar would jump upwards. This obscured custom backgrounds and would cover any logo placed at the top of the site. This bug forces a header area at the top of the site so the title / slogan container no longer collapses.

• Fixes a bug that caused the RSS feeds on blog pages to get intermixed with the tag cloud. This update redefines the containers which house these two items to keep them from running together.

• Closes the html tag. Mistakenly deleted this prior to the initial release. This update adds that closing tag back into the index.html file.

Candy theme update

I have made some updates to our Candy theme to fix a couple of bugs. The bugs that are being fixed are outlined here:

• Fixes problem with site title and slogan display when placed inside the header with a logo. Title and slogan width were decreased to keep from interacting negatively with the logo and pushing down the page. This bug only showed up in Internet Explorer.

I am pretty excited to announce our latest theme. This one is really stylish and fun to use. It sort of came together without a lot of problems and was really fun to develop. So, without further ado, let me introduce you to our latest addition — Float. Below you’ll find a few of the main features of this new theme, but for a list of everything that Float offers, have a look at the product page.

Beautiful and fluffy
Float is a light, airy design that offers you a classy choice for designing your website. This RapidWeaver theme packs a lot of options. It is a theme that is perfect for creating a website for a small business, portfolio, blog, photo album and more.

Backgrounds & headers

Float offers a huge number professionally designed, stylish background styles. The backgrounds included in this theme serve as both a header and a site background. Included in Float are 27 graphical backgrounds along with the ability to use the color picker to choose your own solid color. Or, simply hide the background altogether. View the live preview site to get an idea of the high quality, background images and watch our demo video to see all of the included backgrounds. There are also 6 blank slots for use with RWmultitool.

Sidebar

Float includes seven sidebar variations. Not only can you place your sidebar on the left or the right, but you can also choose to locate it at the bottom of the site, just above the footer. In addition to normal sidebar styles you can choose to dress up the sidebar as well. We offer an option for a 3D inset look on either the left or the right, as well as a talk-bubble-esque look for the sidebar at the bottom. Find it... in style
Float incorporates a very stylish search feature into its menu bar. When a visitor to your site clicks the magnifying glass located on the right-hand side of the menu bar a search field will float up and allow them to use Google to search your site.

Stylish navigation
One of the main highlights of the Float theme is its beautiful floating menu bar. It allows users to navigate your site in style. In setting up your site with RapidWeaver, and our Float theme, you have a wide variety of options available to you.

Float allows you to:
• Change the font style and size
• Modify the background of the selected items
• Change the division lines between menu items

Float offers four fonts to choose from in the menu. It also gives you the option of three font sizes.

When changing the current selected item's appearance you have eight different options.

We've also provided five different menu divider lines.

Stylish Stacks

I have been working with Isaiah, from YourHead Software, on designing the user interface and icons for his latest RapidWeaver plug-in, Stacks. I’d like to tell you a little about the plug-in and show you some of the icons we developed and a little bit of the process behind developing the icons.

Slices
Each Stacks page is built from slices that are defined by you, the user. Anything from a Styled Text slice to an Image or Columns slice. You can create a complex layout quickly and with ease. Each slice needed a simple, clear icon to represent it. Isaiah had an idea of the sort of icons he was looking for to represent most of these slices. So I took his sketches and turned them into finished icons.

Interface
I also worked with Isaiah on developing the User Interface for Stacks. Below are a few of the initial ideas I came up with for the Library design and main content interface. Some were more ‘out there’ than others.

In the end we settled on the matte black Library. We also added a non-standard, classy library trigger in the lower right corner of the interface. The final UI design came out rather well, I think, and is easy to use and navigate.

Iconic
Isaiah and I were quite lucky in developing the Stacks icon. After sketching some ideas out for myself to start from I jumped right into Cinema 4D to mockup some icon ideas. Luckily these early renders were what Isaiah was looking for and the metaphor fit well with the title and functionality of the plug-in. Some of the early ideas can be seen here:

Just a quick couple of changes to the site— I’ve fixed a wrong link in the RSS feed in the sidebar the left. You can read our blog via that RSS feed or subscribe via Feedburner.

I also added the Skinny Series of themes back to the theme listing page. I’d mistakenly left it out, even though Paper and Plastic are both available and come in the Ultimate bundle.

I’ve also styled up the Comments pop-up window a bit to dress things up to match the new site design. Click on the Comments link at the end of this post to check it out. Let me know what you think.

I would first like to apologize that it has been quiet around here as of late. The reason may seem obvious now, but it is because we’ve been working to redesign the entire elixir site from the ground up, create a new theme and much, much more.

I'll cover some of the new areas of the site and new theme below. I would love to hear your thoughts on the new site as well and if there are any areas where you think we could improve upon it.

Before I jump into the site redesign, I’d like to introduce you to our latest theme, Candy—

Candy is a highly flexible, super stylish RapidWeaver theme, with a gooey, tasty center.

A new home

We figured it was time to spruce up the elixir site a bit, and what better time to do so than when we're releasing a new theme, along with some other goodies.

Our new site features not only an updated look, but also updated content. Our landing page has been further simplified and our interior pages have been expanded. All of our theme product pages were updated to be more stylish and to add more detailed descriptions of the themes as well as extra screenshots.

We've also updated our Help Desk to be more friendly and easy to use.

More goodies

We've added a lot of other new goodies. Some of which include a new set of Collage 2 Styles, Carousel Styles, and Mac and iPhone wallpapers. In addition to our company blog (which you’re reading) I've also added a personal, tumblr blog to post links, photos, quotes and much more.

The mailman delivered my copy of Design Meltdown's The Web Designer's Idea Book just the other day. I ordered a copy to check out all of the amazing site designs as well as to see the spots where elixir sites were listed.

I originally thought our sites would merely be shown as thumbnails, like most sites in the book, and didn't expect much more. Boy, was I surprised! Not only did elixir and CSStux make it into the book, but both were touted in the introductions to their respective chapters. The elixir site leads off the Icons section on pages 172-173 and CSStux begins the chapter relating to Shine on pages 205-206. You can also find a site we created long ago for Todd Albertson on page 24.

I was very honored by Patrick's kind words.

One of the funny but great things, I thought, was that on the same pages that list and tout elixir, the e-junkie site is listed. Patrick compares elixir's use of icons to that of e-junkie's. What's great is I designed them both.

With the release of Collage 2, YourHead Software has introduced some killer features. The greatest feature, I feel, is the option to have expandable, customizable, and distributable styles.

I've been so thrilled by it that not only have I created many of the styles that you'll find in the Collage 2 already, I've sat down and created two additional sets of Collage 2 styles.

Vanilla bug fix

We've had a couple of reports of the top sidebar option in the Vanilla theme being broken. There was in fact a small bug which prevented the background of the top sidebar from appearing as well as the option to change the color of the sidebar background.

We've updated the theme to fix this bug. We're giving you the option of how to update your theme.

You can either download the full version of the theme and replace your current version (instructions are included in the README file that comes with the full download). Full versions have been sent out via e-junkie for all Vanilla owners.

The second option is to use the update installer found here.

The updater installs ONLY the one file that needs to be updated (colors.css). This allows for any modifications you've made to other files to remain intact. It also saves you the trouble of reconfiguring your site after re-installing the full theme. Using the updater is the reccomended process.

Please note that your Vanilla theme must be located in the default themes location for this updater to work. RapidWeaver, by default, installs all themes here and would only be elsewhere if you purposefully moved it. If this is the case, move it back to the default location before running the updater.

This brings our Vanilla theme up to version 1.5.

We do a lot of things here at elixir — Stock and custom RapidWeaver themes, icon and logo design, website development, and now even homework. OK, we don't do homework, but we help!

One of our customers e-mailed us the other day to ask a question. In his e-mail he also included this anecdote that made use smile. I asked him if we could share it with you all and he kindly obliged:

From Robert:

I bought one of your themes — Elements — the day I bought Rapidweaver. My 10 year old son announced he had a major project on space to deliver for school — "Just a written report, film or presentation" he said. He had done virtually nothing in three weeks and it needed to be in the next morning! Neither of us had ever designed a website in our lives, but after seeing your theme, I risked it, we downloaded RW and your theme, learned how to use it in an afternoon and completed the project on space shuttles as a website just a few hours later, thanks to you and the folks at RW. It really was a cinch to use even for a ten year old. My only disappointment was that he only got a B [on the project] — but at least it was better than the fail he would have been heading for with no project.

Reading this e-mail from Robert truly made me smile. I'm very happy that we could help out, without even knowing it. It also shows how quick anyone can pickup RapidWeaver and start learning it.

I'd not mentioned this to Robert yet, and wanted to wait until this blog post went up, but we've sent he and his son some other themes. Just in case he might have some other school projects to work on. ;-)

It is here! And it is wonderful!

Realmac Software released RapidWeaver 4.0 today. The update is a free upgrade for RapidWeaver users and is a major release.

It has been a long time in the making. When I began beta testing the gem I was taken aback! Its new interface is clean, easy to use and intuitive. And not to mention beautiful.

For those not familiar with RapidWeaver

RapidWeaver is a revolutionary but friendly piece of web design software made exclusively for the Mac. Using easy drag and drop technology RapidWeaver lets you easily build a website tailored to your personal needs. Blogs, Photo albums, Movie pages, Styled text and more can be created at the click of a button and customised to make a site to be proud of. Once finished, you site is easily published to .Mac, FTP or SFTP accounts and RapidWeaver has built-in Smart Publishing that only uploads changed files, making future updates to your site fast and simple.

Whew, we have finished our updates in preparing for RapidWeaver 4.0's immanent arrival.

All of our themes have been upgraded, adding in, and updating, the few files that will bring them up to date for RapidWeaver 4.0.

All of our latest themes have already been shipped with the files needed and the rest fixed today or a couple of weeks ago when we sent out other updates.

The themes updated today all got updaters, which make it easier to do the upgrades. The updater only replaces the following files within your theme(s):

• Preview.Png
• Preview_Large.jpg
• Theme.Plist

All other files within the theme go untouched.

For the updater to work your themes must be located in the Library>Application Support>RapidWeaver folder located in your User folder. If you're unsure what this means, then you have probably not moved your themes or modified them. The updaters will only work with the theme installed. Without the theme it is useless.

Also, people have asked whether changes they have made themselves to their Theme.Plist file will get overwritten. Yes. This updater replaces that file. Be sure to back it up if necessary before running the updater.

Well, let me tell you what just happened. Within the span of about an hour and a half we successfully migrated one of our sister sites, CSStux, over to DreamHost as well. So painless. So quick. It is just extraordinary!

What had become a week-long nightmare ended up as a dream today.

I have been battling problems with my web host and domain registrar for about a week now. What started as a few slow loading pages blossomed into entire areas of the site simply not loading. When I contacted my provider, GoDaddy, to gain a bit of assistance they told me: 'The problem has been resolved and if you have further problems, let us know.'

Great, I thought. I like it when people help me solve my problems. But unfortunately it was not true. I went back and forth a few times and even involved John over at Loghound at one point to help me figure things out. But alas it all pointed back to GoDaddy. Funny thing is they kept repeating their mantra: 'Everything is fine. Nothing is wrong.'

Well, I couldn't take their lack of help any longer. So I packed my bags and headed for a better host. Upon John's recommendation I checked out DreamHost. And let me tell you what, these guys are very helpful and quick. They didn't let my e-mails go unanswered or take 8 hours to return them, as GoDaddy did.

Within the day they had everything up and running and everything is back to normal. Funny thing is, I didn't change my coding at all. Everything, code-wise, is and was working fine. Come to find out, it was a GoDaddy problem. Go figure.

If you're looking for a host or just a domain registrar, I would highly recommend DreamHost. But, no matter who you go with, just say NoDaddy.

We will be moving CSStux and a few of our other projects over to DreamHost, from GoDaddy, early next week when our schedule becomes a little more freed up.

Have an ever expanding, Rapidweaver-built, website? You want to allow your visitors to search through all of those pages quickly and easily do you? What's that? You want them to not have to leave your site to do so?!

Well, you're in luck. Josh Lockhart has just released RapidSearch.

Here's a snippet from his site about the plug-in:

Rapidweaver users have been asking for an easy website search solution that will display search results within their own website.... RapidSearch [is] a painfully simple solution that will search your website without redirecting to a third party search engine. Now your website visitors can search your site and view the results, all without leaving your website!

The plug-in does require a few things that some Rapidweaver users may not have available to them if you're hosting your site on .Mac. Be sure you have the following, and that your site is indexed by Yahoo!:
• Requires PHP (4 or 5) with CURL support
• Limited to 5000 queries per IP per 24 hours
• Requires Rapidweaver v3.5.1 (Build 264) or higher

So far I am liking this plug-in. My only complaint is that to this point is that at times Yahoo! takes a good deal of time to dish out results, leaving it as if the site is hung. Perhaps some sort of waiting/processing indicator would help? GoDaddy's servers had poor PHP support, which was causing delays is my searches. This has been fixed thanks to my transfer to DreamHost. Overall though,it is added to our must have list of plug-ins.

Wired, schmired!

I did it! No, I haven't yet found the cure for the common cold. But fret not, I am working on it. No, in fact, in the grand scheme of things, this is much smaller, but, nevertheless, it is still quite exciting for me.

I made a stop at my local Apple store today and bought the new AirPort Extreme.

And I must say, it rocks. Very easy to setup, and as with all of Apple products, it is beautifully designed. My favorite thing about it so far is its ability to connect to a USB 2.0 external hard drive and transfer content to and from it wirelessly. I've even placed my iTunes video content on the drive and have been streaming it from the drive to my laptop. It has performed this task like a champ. Hiccup free even at 802.11g.

Now all I have to do is convince myself to order the 802.11n card for my Core Duo MacBook Pro, and I will be cruising g-street at high-speed.

Mining for Quartz

So, I've recently begun teaching myself to use Apple's Quartz Composer. This little app is included on the Developer Tools CD, and it is absolutely amazing.

In finding some resources to further my knowledge of Quartz I stumbled upon this site.

Each of these animations was done in an hour, give or take, using Quartz Composer, and as far as I am concerned are brilliantly done. While my work with Quartz is just beginning, I cannot promise it will lead to anything, but I'm certainly hoping it will.

Wireless woes

I was one of the early Intel adopters with my purchase of a Core Duo MacBook Pro. My 12" PowerBook unfortunately died a quick death, just months before the Core 2 Duos were released, forcing me to get a new machine earlier than I'd hoped. Nonetheless, I love my MacBook Pro. The only thing that has gotten me down about it was when I heard that the Core 2 Duos, which I had hoped to purchase, came with the new 802.11n wireless cards, while the earlier Core Duos were left out in the cold. *sigh*

But, fortunately a company by the name of QuickerTek has stepped up in allowing us early adopters to upgrade our wireless cards. Aty about $150 USD it is a bit more than I would like to pay to install it myself, but I am very thankful for the option. The new card comes with instructions on installing it in both the consumer MacBook and the MacBook Pro.

I guess I just need to place my order and to work up the courage to dismantle my MacBook Pro now. I thought I would share the link in case anyone else wanted to brave the task as well.

I personally want to try out the new Airport Extreme's ability to connect to an external USB 2.0 drive over the wireless connection.

Nik walks you through why it is important and how to easily set yours up inside of Rapidweaver. And he does it all through his new video screencast in his Rapidweaver Tips. This is Tip #4 of his growing list of helpful hints.

He's also got a new tip up on using PHP in your Rapidweaver site. This one is a bit more on the advanced side, while the Base URL is on the easier, everyone-should-learn-this side of things.

So I opened up Mint today to find that our daily page views tally had gone through the roof. And this was at noon. Since then we have had a huge influx of visits from CSSRemix, WebCreme, CSS Container and CSS Import. It seems we were picked up by some of the major CSS showcase sites.

I feel very, very honored.
